I was on the bus this morning doing what I always do, break out the ipod touch and see what apps I have to play with for the next 20 minutes or so.

Over the weekend a friend of mine told me about Bloom, the new ipod/iphone app for making ambient music by Brian Eno. I’d heard of it before, but had never played with it.

Well, I downloaded it today, and it is really nice. Not only will it let you create ambient music, but it itself oozes relaxation with pastel colors and gradients interacting with your tapping making rythms.

As I was using it, it got me to thinking about relaxation and music in general. Music is long been known to cause emotions in people, it’s one of the most powerful forms of creation in people. It’s universal, all cultures and people use music as a form of teaching, worshipping, learning, etc. and it’s only natural that people use music as a therepuetic way of releasing stress.

So, can music creation be therapeutic? And if so, can you bottle that therapy in a iphone application? With Bloom, for me, I think that you can. Being in a creative field, and constantly thinking, it’s nice to be able to relax, set some tones and look inward and tune out for 20 minutes.

Just don’t play with Bloom while walking, it may put you in such a relaxed state that you don’t even mind when you get hit by a car after not paying attention to your surroundings.
