I just got back from Steel City Ruby Conf, and I had a revelation while there. I’ve been doing front end design, user experience work for about 10 years. I’ve wanted to get into programming etc., for awhile and my end goal has been really, to be able to create things that I want to build and not rely on others. I now realize, that I’ll ALWAYS need to rely on people, that it was kind of prideful thinking that made me think I’m some sort of island.
For awhile, I thought that this programming thing had to be passive, until I heard about Pair Programming. I now realize that while I don’t necessarily have the skill set to contribute terribly from TEACHING someone how to program per se, I do have knowledge that I could share when it comes to interaction design, aesthetic, user engagement, etc.
So I want to offer that up. I am willing to help any developer who needs a fresh set of eyes on their application and give them some feedback and suggestions to make it better from a design and usability standpoint. In exchange, if you want, we can share ideas and things for future projects, pair program, etc.
Point is, I’m kind of done sitting idly by, waiting to learn things and not contributing to a community out of my own sense of fear and trepidation or uncertainty about what I DON’T know. I wanna have fun, and if you wanna have fun and build things too, I’m available.
Thank you, everyone who i met at Steel City Ruby Conf, and all the speakers… you really inspired me to be reflective, and have some intentions moving forward about what I want out of all this and I really appreciate it.
